In photos, why do some people get red eye more than others?

Red eye occurs when the bright flash from the camera enters the eye and reflects off the retina back into the camera. I suppose one reason that some people are more susceptible is that they probably stare directly into the camera more. Staring straight back increases the chance of red eye. The other reason would be related to the size and color of a person's iris, which controls how much light can get into the eye. (I wonder if blondes have more red eye?) Cameras with red eye reduction turn the flash on early in order to cause the subjects iris to contract to reduce the amount of light getting in (and out) of the eye.

Edit: After reading the comments, I looked further into the effect of eye color on causing red eye. It's not the color of the iris that has an effect, it's the amount of melanin in the eye. Melanin absorbs the red light, reducing the amount of red light reflected back to the camera.

Your retina is red, which is why it's called red eye.

Lighter color eyes let more light in.

I am a natural blonde and always get red eyes in photos, even when in a photo with other blondes or light eyed people who's colour comes out fine- its weird! I constantly look like a red eye demon.Hmmm?

LOL. Truth be told, red-eye is a hint to a person's wild personality.

i dont think it has anything to do with hair color at all, i think its the amount of blood vessels...

i am very curious though.. i am blonde, but not naturally, its kinda a light brown/darker blonde... but i ALWAYS HAVE THE MOST RED EYE THAN EVERYONE ELSE. always, my eyes are a very very very dark brown color almost black.. i thought that was it but asian/indian and black with really dark eyes people still have less red eye than me.
I pretty much always get red eye, not just at night. when ever theres a flash i guess... please anyone explain? or confirm if it is because of how many blood vessels?

True, the color of the reflection from the retina is red because of the blood vessels.

Apparently the amount of melanin in the eye effects how much of the light is reflected back out. Lighter eyed people typically have less malanin, so they get red eye more often. It's not the color of the iris, as I first thought.

I have very dark brown eyes and I seem to get red eye more often than others...even some of my blue and green eyed friends! I've always heard that people with lighter eyes get it more often because the iris blocks less light but that doesn't seem to be the case.
